Moving to Atlanta [May. 22nd, 2007|07:40 am]

I'm finally getting a chance to talk about my move to Atlanta last week. The original plan was to have my furniture in storage on Monday, pack up the car and clean the apartment on Tuesday and hit the road Wednesday morning. That all went out the window due to my own procrastination and lack of finding someone to help me move my furniture. I finally found a friend to help me on Wednesday. But by the time I got finished moving furniture, packing the car and cleaning it was Wednesday evening.

I finally hit the road at 8:30pm. After 4 hours of driving I stopped for the night in Bakersfield, CA. My goal for Thursday was to make it Albuquerque, NM. I forgot how desolate the Mojave Desert can be! It was very boring till I started climbing in elevation on the way to Flagstaff, AZ. Then the scenery was much more interesting. I made it to Albuquerque in 11 hours. It was a long day but wasn't bad. My goal for Friday was a big one, Little Rock, AR. This was going to be a very long day. I was expecting the scenery to be pretty boring through Texas and Oklahoma but it wasn't bad. It ended up taking me 13 hours but I made it. That left me with what I thought would take about 8 hours to get to Atlanta on Saturday. Part way through the drive to Atlanta I got a call from my new roommate Ken ([info]ufcub). He was heading off to a friend's pool party and when I told him where I was he invited me along. Needless to say it didn't take 8 hours to get to Atlanta that day. The thought of furry muscled men in bathing suits saved me an hour!

So all in all the trip wasn't as bad as I thought it would be! And there were several memorable things along the way. The 1st was eating at a Cracker Barrel in Gallup, NM. The crowd in the restaurant was half white and half native american. The native americans would look at me and go back to their business. The whites would just stare at me with their mouths agape! I thought that was interesting. The 2nd was getting cruised by a very hot muscle bear in the parking lot of a MacDonald's in Amarillo, TX. The guy had an even bigger smile on his face when he noticed my leather bear sticker on my car! ;)

We try to be friendly here in Texas. Even up in the panhandle. (GRIN)...

I wish I would have had the time to see just how friendly Texans could be!

Great posting, Don. What an amazing journey across the country. I'm glad you're here in Atlanta. I've not had a roommate since I was 19, but I know this will be a great experience for both of us!

Welcome :)

Thank you, Ken! The trip wasn't really that bad. And I did get to see a lot of the country I hadn't seen before. I'm definitely excited about being roommates! I think we'll get along just fine. Up until this last year I've always had a roommate so I'm used to it. And as you know, I'm a very considerate person so I'm pretty easy to live with. And I promise to keep Crisco off the carpet! ;)

Too bad you did it in a rush job. I'm sure it would be nice to drive across country, stopping at various sites along the way (with friends, of course).
Still must've been a cool experience.

I was in a hurry so I only stopped when I needed to. All the pictures I took I did while driving! At one point I was taking pictures out the windshield and I found my self driving by the LCD display on my camera! But I got to listen to a lot of music I hadn't heard in a long time. And it gave me a lot of time to just think about life!

But it would be fun to do a road trip with a bunch of guys where you had the time to stop and check out the scenery and cavort with the natives along the way!

What?! No adventures at the Mojave rest stop near the Air Force base? It's the best one in the country! And no story about the muscle bear in Amarillo?! I'm so disappointed.

Still, I am glad to hear that you made it there safe and sound. I took the route a little more southerly than yours when I moved out here. But, either way, it can be quite boring. I look forward to your safe return to the bay area at some point. (That is, if you don't end up finding something to keep you in the southeast.) In the meantime, we'll miss you here.

I was in too much of a hurry to think about sex on the drive out here. As a matter of fact, I haven't played at all since my birthday! Oh well, I'll make up for it at IML this weekend!

As for finding someone to keep me in the southeast...more later!

I look forward to seeing you Dore weekend!

Thanks! I've already had a good time and I've just arrived. Everyone has made me feel so welcome! And that's felt really good. I'll mainly be around on weekends but I'm sure we'll see each other.

Thanks! If I had more time I would have stopped and taken pics with my good camera. But I was in a hurry so all the photo were from inside my car while driving! I actually didn't mind driving it by myself. I guess I can be a loner sometimes!
